Mozafati dates

Look closely at the skin. Trace the pattern of the folds in a sketch and see how many details you can capture without touching the fruit.

Close view of dates and their textured skin

Dark skin and soft flesh

Mozafati, also written Mazafati, is a soft, fleshy date associated with the Bam region of Iran. Its skin can look dark brown to almost black, so texture offers another clue when comparing it with other dark varieties.

Try this observation

Look for the line between a highlight and a shadow. Sketch that line to give your drawing a rounded shape.

Compare varieties

Open the LuLu page next. Set your two sketches side by side and describe one difference in outline, skin or colour.

Study a dark surface

Mozafati dates have soft flesh and dark skin. A small reflection can make the curve of the fruit easier to see. Leave that area blank in a pencil sketch. Ask which varieties can be seen on your preferred visit date. Use the next guide to try the same exercise with another variety.
