LuLu dates

Look at the outline first. Is the date round or long? Draw its silhouette before adding the small folds you can see in the skin.

Close view of dates and their textured skin

Round and gently sweet

LuLu is a small, rounded date. As it dries, fine wrinkles can gather across its dark skin. Its outline makes it a good starting point for a child learning to tell dates apart.

Try this observation

Draw the outline of a LuLu beside the longer silhouette of a Majdool. Mark the two ends first, then fill in the curve between them.

Compare varieties

Open the Majdool page next. Set your two sketches side by side and describe one difference in outline, skin or colour.

Take the question to the grove.

Ask the farm whether this variety can be seen on your preferred date. Children can bring their sketches and compare their observations with the family.

An illustrative detail from the world of date palms

Start with the outline

LuLu’s rounded form makes a useful first shape for a young observer. Sketch one curved edge, then look for the small wrinkles that interrupt the outline. Ask which varieties can be seen on your preferred visit date. Use the next guide to try the same exercise with another variety.
