Children’s notebook

Turn a walk into a small observation game. Bring a pencil and paper and let children choose what catches their eye.

Detail of overlapping palm leaflets

Look, listen and sketch.

Look up at a palm. Can you follow one leaf from its stem to its tip? Draw its shape using just three lines.

Pause together and listen. Pick one sound each, then compare what you heard. Ask before touching plants or picking anything.

Take a closer look

Give each child a small page to fill in their own way. A drawing, a word or a question can capture what they noticed. Choose one activity together and leave time for something unexpected.

A palm in three lines

Draw the trunk, add the curve of one frond, then mark the leaflets along its edge. Look up again and change one detail to make the drawing closer to the tree.

A minute of listening

Stand together and listen quietly. Which sound seems closest? Which is farthest away? Draw a little map with a dot for each sound, then compare your maps.

A notebook and a pencil used to sketch a palm

From a tree to a page

Fold a sheet of paper into two panels. On one side draw the whole palm, including its crown. On the other draw one small part: a leaflet, a notch in the trunk or the edge of a shadow. Give your two pictures different names.
